RE: Traveling with the Dog

My question to those who wrote that it is unsafe is, how is it any less safe than, say, for horses in a horse trailer. I am assuming like the original poster that the dogs would be secured in their kennels in the trailer and the windows are open.
Well, in a horse trailer it is much more open. While you have windows in a TT, they aren't as many and do not provide as much ventilation. Plus, technically, some of those windows (most in fact) are not supposed to be opened durning travel (according to the manufacturer's)
Specifically which windows and what manufacturers.... sounds like a load of BS to support a position.
Well...no need to get testy over it....My point was that even with windows open, it's not enough venting on hot days....in addition to my point, I remarked about manufacturers (but that wasn't the main point)...both my Star Craft Antiqua and my Keystone Passport have had stickers on the windows stating that they should be closed during travel. Don't now what your's have said or not said, but mine sure did.

RE: Mid Atlantic Group 2nd ELK NECK MD RALLY Sept. 26-28,2008

We got hit pretty hard around 8:30-9pm last night...a tremendous amount of thunder/lightening and HEAVY rain. The local ER (Baltimore Washington Medical Center) which is only a couple miles from our house had flooding in the ER. They had to call in emergency help and close for what they called a "mini-disaster". YIKES....glad I didn't get sick (not that I'd want to go to that hospital anyhow.)
Glad everyone is ok and fabulous news about Eric's dad!

Cranej....how's Eric's dad doing? How are you guys holding up? It can be more difficult on the family who cares for the patient than it is on the patient......hang in there....prayers still coming your way.

RE: Traveling with the Dog

This is the reason that we two with a Chevy Tahoe. With two kids and two dogs, the suv is a must. The two shelties go in their kennels in the back of the Tahoe for the trip. They ALWAYS go with us and we love it that way. Knowing how hot the trailer gets, you would most likely be putting your dogs at great risk placing them in the trailer. I wish I could say, go for it, but I really feel it would be a mistake and in some state illegal.
We do leave our vents open with air maxx too....but it's still far to hot.

RE: 2009 Mid-Atlantic Killens Pond Gathering Apr 3-5 2009

Rules suck at times, but come on...do you have to be rude when you remind people of them?

Hmmmm.
Good thing you don't speed in White Marsh.
You can be as rude as you want when you carry a gun! I certainly wont argue with you. :E

RE: $175/Month For Covered Storage!!!!!

I'd have to say, going forward I wouldn't buy a home I couldn't park the RV at.
We currently have a home where it's "legal" to park it on the curb, but not so neighbor friendly. Therefore, we pay $75/month for a spot of grass in a fenced storage facility. The owner of the storage facility lives on the front portion of the property. This is an absolutly fabulous rate for our area.
Prior to this place (which is clean and level) we could only find a storage unit with secured coded gate and pavement for $175/month....neither options provided electric or dumping and both only allowed access til 9pm.
BTW---we're in Maryland, near Annapolis.

RE: 2009 Mid-Atlantic Killens Pond Gathering Apr 3-5 2009

That was my main concern. Honestly, I don't mind the rules if they are clearly posted and consistantly enforced or not enforced. But it was the manner in which the camp host spoke to our kids that disturbed me. It's not so much the actual words, as the ton of voice and demeanor of the person delivering the words.
Rules suck at times, but come on...do you have to be rude when you remind people of them?

RE: Quad Bunks without all the Slides

We are looking to upgrade our pop-up and want to get a small TT with quad bunks ( 4 kids ). Everything we can find is huge and has several slides. We would like a very simple and compact option. Quad Bunks, a toilet, and a small kitchen is all we need.
Are there any models that just meet my limited criteria?
Thanks for you help.
We just purchased a 2008 Passport 240qs...quad bunks in front, rear queen slide out (manual), sofa, dinette, bathroom...great combo for us. What can you tow--weight/length? This trailer is 26.1 ft ball to bumper when towing, but 32 feet when open and setup--no tents so set up is fast. It only weighs 4400lbs dry.

RE: Will this work

Sounds very similar to our set-up....we do fine towing out 240QS keystone passport....feel it on steep/long hills, but I think it's a good/safe match.

RE: GPS ??

I have an inexpensive ($149) Tom Tom and it does just fine. Never rely totally on it though...it can take you down some small roads. I try to double check the route on mapquest or good sams before I head out. All GPS's need the old map back up at times.

RE: 2003 GMC Yukon XL 1500 Pulling Passport 280 BH?

Thoughts on this combination?
TV is a 2003 GMC Yukon XL 1500 with 3.73, 7100#s Tow Capacity and will be equipped with WDH & Sway Bars. Passenger total body weight will be 600#s + a 70 # dog. Most everything else will be packed into the trailer.
Passport 280 BH (fully loaded) is 6040#s.
Is anyone doing something like this?
Price is right, trailer is quite nice, Tow Vehicle is paid for.
Thanks to all for your replies!
Darren
Check out our pics in our signature...we are pulling a 2008 Passport 240qs..dry weight about 4400lbs with our 2002 Chevy Tahoe 5.3 V8 rated at 7200lb tow capacity. Does fine. We slow down on the bigger hills out in western Maryland, but she does just fine. We are getting an average of 10.5 MPG towing. One note: ours is 26.1 ft ball to bumper..that's the maximum length we feel comfortable towing with the wheel base of our tahoe...the trailer you are asking about is considerably longer and we wouldn't be comfortable with that length...that's a HUGE sail behind you!

RE: Unsold units

Just like a car...the dealer has to sell them...either to a buyer or they go to auction at some point. I just bought a 2008 TT when the 2009's were cramming the lot and as a result, got a great deal. Looked at the EXACT same trailer a year ago when it was new on the lot and they wanted A LOT more $$$$ for it. It paid to wait the year! :C

RE: What are your opinions?

I think the length of distance traveled will change, but the increase in gas prices is causing everything to increase in price. So why would I stop RVing and spend money on a hotel/plane ticket??? Those prices are up too, so I'm still saving money and sleeping in my own bed by RVing. People may budget more, they may buy a second car for local driving, they might not go as far: stay at local campsites, but I think they'll still go.
One thing the OP mentioned was getting a small TV....this is really counter productive to the towing MPG. The smaller vehicle will have to work harder to do the towing and that usually yields a worse MPG.
For us, so far, we've cut out some dinner's out and do a bit more cost effective grocery purchasing. We've decided not to do the 12-15 hour drive vacation trip, but to stay within 3-4 hours of home. That's worked for us and we're still out there just as much, if not more.
